Fashion | Versace for H&M Preview

Tick tock, tick tock. The clock is winding down and it is almost time for the Versace for H&M collection to hit store shelves and while the North American drop date for these designer duds is Saturday, November 19 I was invited to swing by H&M’s Toronto headquarters to get a peek of the covetable capsule collection.

Donatella Versace went into the Versace archives and created a retrospective collection that features iconically over-the-top prints, revealing designs and bright colours alongside more sleekly modern Versace pieces including deep violet baby doll dress with cutouts along the bust and a floor length number with a slit up to there. The classic Greek key pattern features heavily in the collection―it appears brazenly in gold and silver studs on the hem of a mini dress and subtly on the back pockets of men’s trousers―and Donatella also tapped the archives for micro studded leather  bomber jackets, trench coats, mini dresses and quilted pants and bold, statement prints including tropical fronds, leopards spots and gold chains.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Versace for H&M collection. Designer clothes at fast fashion prices is a difficult equation to solve but Donatella and the H&M team were able to tap into the Versace DNA and create standout pieces that could easily fit into the closets of the masses. While the designs are quite loud―Gianni Versace was all about the more is more aesthetic―the pieces are quite wearable and very well-made with quite a few sporting ‘Made in Italy’ tags (though the chain mail pieces fell a little flat for me).

And if you’d rather ease yourself into the more is more look rather than dive in the Versace for H&M collection also offers gorgeously luxe accessories and housewares.

I’m not into Survivor-esque, last man standing shopping experiences but this collection has me rethinking that perspective. Will you be lining up on November 19 to get your hands on some Versace for H&M designs? Which pieces are worth the wait?

I’ve fallen in love with the faux fur vest with studded buckles, the studded leather trench and all the accessories.
