The Great Debate: Is It Time For The Hermès Birkin To Get An Update?

The Hermès Birkin and the Chanel 2.55 are so similar yet so very different. While they are both luxuriously classic and iconic bags from world-reknowned fashion houses the Chanel 2.55 has been reimagined time and time again in a variety of fabrics, prints and embellishments while the Birkin has maintained it’s pared down image.

When Lady Gaga personalized her black and white Birkins with Kanji and studs (original posts can be viewed here and here) many, who felt that she had committed a fashion sacrilege, were in an uproar.

While her execution of Lady Gaga’s “re-designed” Birkins left much to be desired (re: was really sloppy) I really appreciated the change. However, with Christophe Lemaire – who would like to see “a return to elegance, simplicity, quality, and classicism” – at the head of the Hermes ship I don’t think that a Birkin update is going to happen.

What do you think? Should Hermès loosen the reins a little bit and give the Birkin an update or should the classic Birkin be left alone?
