Vogue Italia’s Annual Black Issue Featuring Black Barbie

Voge Italia The Barbie IssueSo Vogue Italia has decided to make their immensely successful Black Issue an annual affair.  This year’s edition will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Barbie’s introduction with an ode to Black Barbie.

While the first Black Barbie doll made it’s first appearance in 1967 (and was named Francine) the first “Black Barbie” wasn’t introduced until 1980.

The Vogue Italia Black Issue (with the tribute to Black Barbie appearing as a pull-out section) will include editorial spreads featuring Black Barbie dolls and the new So In Style (S.I.S) Black Barbie collection which features dolls with more authentic- looking Black features (think curlier hair, fuller lips, wider noses and more distinct cheek bones).

While I was never a fan of Barbie I will definitely do my best to get a copy of this issue.  Will you?

  1. Lucas Kilravey says:

Italy’s permanently avant garde fashionability never ceases to amaze.

The cover alone makes me wonder why the hell they bother to publish such a paltry North American edition.

  2. Jazzabella says:

I just love to see Black Barbies they are just devine. Such taste and they capture the true essence of a “Chocolate Sista”.
