The popularity and proliferation of leggings and more specifically leggings as pants is one of those contentious issues that many in the fashion industry and blogosphere debate about.
I love leggings but like every other item of clothing there are some rules to the engagement.
Rule #1: One of the purposes of clothes should be to highlight your assets and downplay the things you’re not so proud of. I don’t want to seem discriminatory but leggings, and especially leggings as pants, are not for everybody. Since leggings are tight fitting if you have your fair share of cellulite then leggings are probably not for you. Even black leggings allow cellulite to shine through as the fabric is much like satin – not a very forgiving one.
Rule #2: I am not a fan of sheer leggings (I HATE them actually), however, some leggings are slightly see-through when hit by the sun or bright lights. If this happens with your leggings wear a shirt long enough to cover your naughty bits. You don’t need and should not want everybody who lays eyes on you to be able to see your nether region.
Rule #3: When it comes to jeggings (jeans + leggings = jeggings) JUST.SAY.NO. They are not stylish or revolutionary. They are just tacky. Same goes with leggings with lace trim around the ankle.
Rule #4: Leggings in a business environment? Definitely a no-no. Unless you’re pregnant then avoid it. Why would you want to be wearing your casual wear when everyone else is in a suit?
Bonus tip: when wearing legging as pants try to wear them with a long shirt or tunic.
