Fashion VS. Style?

It’s Manifesto Week over at Fashion Nation where Dottie and Stephie exam what style and fashion mean to them.  They posted this manifesto on their blog.Fashion Nation Manifesto

This manifesto brings to mind a mental debate and conversation that I’ve been having with myself lately (and no I’m not crazy).  ‘Stlye’ and ‘fashion’ and the definitions and differences of both has been something that has been at the forefront of my mind for a few weeks now.  To me ‘fashion’ is the trends that we see on the runways and on the street (the keyword here is ‘trends’) while ‘style’ is a bit more complex.  To be stylish doesn’t mean that you are on trend or trendy.  To me style is something innate and instinctive and something that transcends seasons and trend reports  At the same time somebody can be wearing the trends of the day and still have ‘style’, in my eyes.  I think style is what separates the truly ‘stylish’ from the pretenders.  The Originators from the cookie cutter, paint-by-numbers masses.

What are your definitions of ‘style’ and ‘fashion’?  Is there a difference or are they one in the same?  Leave comments and let me know.
